The Republic Aviation P-47 "Thunderbolt" was the largest single engine piston powered fighter to ever go into production. Powered by the huge Pratt & Whitney R-2800 18 cylinder "Double Wasp" radial engine, it produced over 2,100 horsepower. This engine powered the P-47, the Chance/Vought "Corsair" and the Grumman "Hellcat", among 32 other fighters and bombers.
Pilot William J. Wayland, an astute pilot and veteran of numerous bombing and strafing missions, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions on 23rd December, 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge, shooting down two Luftwaffe fighters and damaging two others (He is believed to have shot down a third, though was uncredited) while defending American ground forces.
