-Having flown photo reconnaissance for a couple of years, Shomo had never even seen a Japanese aircraft. After getting the F-6D, the photo-recon version of the P-51 "Mustang" in December 1944, he continued his missions in the Northern Philippine area. At the beginning of January 1945, he stumbled across a Aichi "Val" dive bomber and shot it down with ease. Two days later, Shomo and his wingman spotted a formation of twelve fighters escorting a single Mitsubishi "Betty" bomber. They dove in against overwhelming odds and within six minutes Shomo had shot down seven of the enemy, his wingman three.
Having only EVER seen a total of 14 enemy aircraft, Shomo shot down eight. He was awarded the Medal Of Honor for his actions on this day.
