REPUBLIC AIRCRAFT P-47D “THUNDERBOLT” Fighter Bomber
First Lieutenant (U.S. Army Air Force) William J. Wayland, United States Army Air Forces.
While serving as Pilot of a P-47 Fighter-Bomber in the 395th Fighter Squadron, 368th Fighter Group, NINTH Air Force, in aerial combat against enemy forces on 23 December 1944, Wayland shot down two FW190s and an Me109 in combat. He had been performing a bombing run against Wehrmacht tanks during the Battle Of The Bulge when his group was intercepted by Luftwaffe fighters. Wayland had been dropping bombs and strafing for months yet had only ever come into aerial combat for the first time just two weeks before, when he shot down an Me109.
He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (Second only to the Medal Of Honor) for his actions over Bastogne.
