A Californian, Chuck Older learned to fly in the U.S. Marine Corps. Joining the American Volunteer Group (AVG), popularly known as the “Flying Tigers” in 1940, Older quickly applied his knowledge, becoming the flight leader of the 3rd squadron, “Hell’s Angels”. He became a double “Ace” with 10 victories over the Japanese in early 1942, making him the third highest scoring ace of the Tigers. With the disbanding of The AVG, he transferred to the Army Air Force and continued his run to 18.25 victories.
After the war, he became a lawyer and served with the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office until he was appointed to the bench. He was the presiding judge at the Sharon Tate/Charlie Manson murder trial.
