On September 16, 1943, Major Thomas Lynch and his wingman, Richard Bong caught a Mitsubishi Ki-46 "Dinah" off the coast of New Guinea. Lynch went on to rack up an ultimate score of 20 "kills" before his untimely death, shot down at low altitude by a Japanese barge he was strafing.
His constant wingman, Richard "Dick" Bong, went on to become the top U.S. ace of all time with 40 victories.
